ICPA – Shoot Out
For the photographer at ICPA, there are 3 total events: the shoot out, the critique, and the awards ceremony.
The topic of shoot out is held a secret until minutes before we go out. Last year’s topic was the economy. Speculation this year was that it would be a green theme. At around 2:15 we found out that this year’s theme was ‘Contrast’. I quickly brainstormed just to throw out those ideas since they would be too obvious.
Cropping and editing was not allowed, mostly because this year we were not hosted by the Chicago Tribune, just a guy from NIU with a laptop. I present these photos to you as untouched, just like I would have had to submit and did submit them.
I found it difficult to pick JUST ONE photo as my submission since I had no idea how inventive I could get.
This guy’s contrast was that he was wearing cubs and sox apparel, though it wasn’t very readable in most images.
This is the photo I submitted. Manuel is a valet at Ditka’s Steakhouse. I liked the play of the logo on the glass window of the valet hut, but he isn’t really doing much.
It was great to see all the other submitted photos at the critique Saturday morning. I ended up placing 2nd out of 15. First again was a photographer from Columbia College – home field advantage. I think there were some deserving photos that were left out, particularly the ISU photo editor, who got great access and a great photo but no recognition.
At the awards ceremony, staffer Brad Meyer got First Place in Sports Photo, Wesley Fane got Second Place in Feature Photo, and I got Second Place in Photo Essay – see my essay here
Next year, I want to win every category, or maybe just someone from the DI…

Feech Beech
I remembered just now that when I first got hired at the Daily Illini, I hated taking pictures of people. I was an ignorant landscape and architecture shooter, and I wasn’t very good at it. Yesterday, I knew there was the ROTC commencement at Foellinger Auditorium, so I tried to time it to be there when they were coming out, getting a feature shot of students in dress, with emotional families or something nice. Instead I got this. A commissioning of a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Though I can count the ‘feeches’ I’ve taken on my hands, this is definitely the best of the group, the Thumb of feeches!
